Stay Safe. Stay Compliant. Stay On The Road.

Your annual Virginia State Safety Inspection is more than just another item on your to-do list. It's an opportunity to make sure the vehicle you rely on every day is safe, compliant, and ready for whatever the road brings.

At Tire Discounters, our certified inspectors evaluate the safety essentials required by Virginia law, including your brakes, tires, steering, suspension, lights, windshield and wipers, mirrors, seat belts, horn, exhaust system, fuel system, and more.

If your vehicle doesn't pass, we'll explain exactly what we found, what needs attention, and why. In many cases, we can complete the necessary repairs during the same visit, making it easier to get your Virginia inspection sticker and get back on the road.

Safe. Compliant. Ready to drive. That's the goal.

Understanding the Virginia State Safety Inspection Process

  • A mechanic in a garage wearing safety glasses and a dark blue work shirt applies a bottle of oil under a car. Another person is partially visible on the right, and a red tool cabinet is on the left.

What Happens During a Virginia State Safety Inspection?

During your visit, our certified inspectors perform Virginia's official 24-point safety inspection by examining the safety-related systems required by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Once the inspection is complete, we'll review the results with you, answer any questions, and let you know whether your vehicle is ready to receive its Virginia inspection sticker or if any repairs are needed first.

No confusion. No surprises. Just straightforward information and expert service.

    If Your Vehicle Doesn't Pass

Unbalanced, unevenly worn tires wear out faster, cost you more, and make every drive less safe.

Tires shimmy like a washing machine when they're out of balance. Front tires take the brunt of turning, braking, and acceleration, so they wear down differently, and faster, than rear tires. That’s why rotating your tires every 5,000 miles is key to getting the most life out of them. Unlike the other guys, we include FREE lifetime rotation and balancing with every four-tire purchase and every oil change.

Most places charge up to $40 every time and often don’t even rebalance. Not us. Why pay more for less?

    Common Reasons Vehicles Don't Pass

Most inspection failures are caused by normal wear and tear, not major mechanical problems. Some of the most common reasons vehicles fail a Virginia State Safety Inspection include:

    • Worn brake components
    • Tires with insufficient tread
    • Burned-out headlights or brake lights
    • Damaged windshield wiper blades
    • Steering or suspension wear
    • Windshield damage that affects visibility
    • Exhaust system concerns

Keeping up with routine maintenance can often help prevent unexpected inspection issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do I need a Virginia State Safety Inspection?

Virginia-registered motor vehicles, trailers, and semitrailers subject to the state's inspection requirements must be inspected at least once every 12 months. Check the expiration date on your inspection sticker and schedule early to help avoid last-minute delays.

What does a Virginia State Safety Inspection include?

Virginia State Safety Inspections cover important safety systems including your brakes, steering, suspension, tires, lights, windshield, wiper blades, mirrors, seat belts, horn, exhaust system, fuel system, and other equipment required by state law.

How much does a Virginia State Safety Inspection cost?

A Virginia State Safety Inspection costs $20 for most passenger vehicles at authorized inspection stations. Virginia establishes the maximum inspection fee for passenger vehicles, so pricing is generally consistent across authorized Virginia inspection stations.

How long does a Virginia State Safety Inspection take?

Most inspections are completed in about 20 to 30 minutes, depending on your vehicle and current shop traffic.

Do I need to make an appointment?

Appointments are recommended to minimize your wait, although availability varies by location. Many people tend to make an appointment at the last minute at the end of the month, so making an appointment early in the month can help with availability. Contact your local Tire Discounters for scheduling information.

What can cause my vehicle to fail a Virginia State Safety Inspection?

Common reasons include worn brake components, tires with insufficient tread, burned-out lights, damaged windshield wiper blades, steering or suspension wear, windshield damage that affects visibility, and other safety-related concerns identified during the inspection.

What happens if my vehicle doesn't pass?

If your vehicle doesn't pass inspection, we'll explain the results, discuss any necessary repairs, and answer your questions. Many repairs can often be completed during the same visit so you can return for reinspection as quickly as possible. You may have the work completed at Tire Discounters or choose another repair provider.

How long is a Virginia rejection sticker valid?

A Virginia rejection sticker is valid for 15 calendar days beyond the day it is issued. If you return to the same Tire Discounters location within that period, the reinspection generally focuses on the items that did not pass, unless another obvious safety issue is found. A $1 reinspection fee may apply. If the rejection sticker expires, a complete inspection and the regular inspection fee may be required.

Where can I get a Virginia inspection sticker?

Authorized Virginia inspection stations, including Tire Discounters, can perform Virginia State Safety Inspections. Once your vehicle passes inspection, you'll receive an official Virginia inspection sticker.

Is a Virginia State Safety Inspection the same as an emissions inspection?

No. A Virginia State Safety Inspection evaluates your vehicle's safety systems. Emissions inspections are a separate program that only applies in certain Northern Virginia localities. Tire Discounters' Virginia locations perform Virginia State Safety Inspections.

Can I drive with an expired inspection sticker?

Virginia law requires most registered vehicles to maintain a current inspection sticker. Driving with an expired inspection sticker may result in a citation.
