March is Here. Is Your Car Actually Ready?

Car parked on an open road with trunk full of luggage, ready for a spring break road trip

The days are getting longer, the temps are creeping up, and you’re probably already planning that first big escape of the year.

Whether you’re heading south for Spring Break or just loading up for a weekend drive to forget about February, the open road is calling. But before you throw the bags in the trunk, you need to answer one question: Is your car ready to handle it? Let’s be real—winter was brutal. The freezing temps, the salt, and the potholes that felt more like craters have taken a toll on your ride, even if it feels fine right now.

Here is your "Spring Break" checklist to make sure you spend your trip driving, not waiting for a tow truck.

1. The Post-Winter Pothole Check (Alignment)

You probably hit a few potholes this winter. It happens. But even one bad hit can knock your suspension out of whack.

If your steering wheel is off-center or your car pulls to the left or right, you’re fighting the road and chewing up your tires. Since we are the Home of the Free Alignment, there’s no reason to ignore this. Let us check it so you don't ruin your tires halfway to your destination.

2. Tire Rehab

Cold weather messes with tire pressure, and winter roads hide a lot of wear and tear. Before you commit to a 500-mile trek, you need to know your rubber is up for the job.

Tire Tread: Bald tires slide on wet spring roads. Don't risk it. (Learn more in our Tire Tread Safety blog post ).

Tire Pressure: Proper inflation = better gas mileage.

The Eye Test: We look for bubbles, cracks, or chunks missing from those potholes we mentioned.

3. Fluid Refresh

Winter turns engine oil into molasses and clogs up filters. If you’re overdue for an oil change, get it done before the trip. Fresh fluids help your engine run cool, which is critical if you’re going to be stuck in traffic or driving long hauls.

Pro Tip: Don't forget your windshield washer fluid. Spring means bugs and rain, so make sure you're topped off.

4. The "Stop" Check (Brakes)

Spring showers make roads slick. You need to know that when you hit the brakes, your car stops—period.

If you’ve been hearing a squeak or feeling a grind, that’s not "normal." That’s your car begging for help. Be sure to read our post on Brake Safety Week to learn what to listen for. Also, check your wiper blades while you're at it; if they're streaking now, they won't help you in a downpour.

Don't Let a Breakdown Ruin the Vibe

Nobody wants to spend their vacation on the side of the interstate. Stop by Tire Discounters for a pre-trip safety check. We’ll look over the tires, brakes, battery, and alignment to make sure your vehicle is as ready to go as you are.
