When should I replace my tires?
This is a very common question. By law in most states, a tire needs
to be replaced when it has been worn down to 2/32" of remaining
tread depth. Drivers can perform a simple test to check the tread
remaining on their tires. Simply place a penny into several tread
grooves across your tire. If a part of Lincoln's head is covered by
the tread, that means you have more than 2/32" of tread depth
remaining on your tire. A quarter can also be used to perform the
same test. Place the quarter into several grooves across the tire.
If part of Washington’s head is covered by the tread, you have
more than 4/32" of depth remaining.
The law states that a tire should be replaced at 2/32". If you are
concerned about wet or snow covered roads and your ability to
handle your vehicle in these conditions, then you should probably
think about replacing your tires at 4/32". At this tread depth the
performance of the tire in rain and snow will be greatly reduced.
